1968 MERCURY COUGAR XR7 for sale. Motorcar Classics is proud to present this 1968 Mercury Cougar XR7 featured in Augusta Green with Black vinyl roof and Dark Ivy Gold vinyl interior. Although the Mercury Cougar is based on the wildly successful 1965 Ford Mustang, it is much more than a badge-engineered version of the original ponycar. It is clearly sporty, yet it is also luxurious. It has not only style but also grace. In short, the Cougar is the very definition of what Mercury promoted as Americas most complete luxury sports car. The first-generation Cougar has a look all its own, highlighted by a grille featuring vacuum-operated hideaway headlights, this expansive nose clip is the cars signature styling element. At the tail end are taillights with three sequentially operated elements hidden behind vertical chrome strips. Overall, the Cougar is 6.7 inches longer than a 1967-68 Mustang. In concept, the Mercury Cougar lies between a sporty car like the Ford Mustang and a personal luxury car like the eras Ford Thunderbird. You will find that the Cougar rides better than the Mustang thanks to a wheelbase thats 3.2 inches longer, along with longer rear leaf springs. The Cougar was offered only as a two-door pillarless hardtop in either base or upscale XR-7 trim, like our beautiful example. The XR-7 includes a wood-grain dash, toggle switches, and an overhead binnacle of warning lights, all meant to convey the look of hand-tooled elegance. The Cougar XR-7 was meant to conjure up the image of a European-style grand touring car, and sitting in the cockpit looking at the instrument faces, wood dash, toggle switches, and door pockets, the feeling does come across.
Our XR7 has the original 302CI V8 with four barrel carburetor that was rebuilt and upgraded to produce approximately 380HP!  It has Fords automatic gearbox and upgraded AC with modern compressor. The history file includes receipts and details for the engine rebuild in 2015 and a new interior the same year. There are additional receipts for a suspension rebuild and much additional work. The car is fast and a delight to drive. With excellent parts availability, simple maintenance, comfortable interior, and AC - this is a classic car that you could drive every day.
